Choosing a wooden floor | Solidfloor™

Those who visited imm might have noticed I stept a bit out of the monochrome comfort zone you are used to see from me. When designing the space I was aware of the fact that many would expect an overal black and white stand from me as somehow people seem to identify the term monochrome and my blog with only black and white. If you look closer you will see I have always loved and used some strong raw and black materials, and I am a fan of stone, marble, metal, leather, old wood and a bit of imperfection and the unexpected.

For this project where I could let my imagination run wild and thus try out new things Solidfloor™ turned out to be the perfect partner as I wanted to use a dark flooring to create an intimate and soft look. Colour on the walls is of course not new to me but I haven't used any in years and was happy to discuss the colours I choose over a cup of coffee with my friend Iris, who is a trend watcher and colour specialist. You can read more about the final colours I choose in this blogpost: vtwonen paint for Graham and Brown

It is great to have friends to share your ideas with, people like Iris dare to use colour and make beautiful combinations that work, for this project I thought I needed to stay really close to what I really love though and at the end trust my own ideas. One good advice she gave me was to focus more on material, something I am working on at my own home as well where I use a lot of steel furniture at the moment. For the stand I ended up using a good mix of materials like coloured glass, wood, stone, wool, steel, leather, cork, soft plaids and handmade rugs with lots of structure. See a list of all items and more pictures of the floor in this previous blogpost: Pictures from my stand at imm 2017

Choosing a wooden floor from Solidfloor™
The starting point for my stand was an intense contrasting, extra rustic dark wooden parquet floor from the Earth & Fire collection and I think the 'Yampa' floor I choose really stood out and helped to create the atmosphere I was aiming for. With a sample of the flooring I choose the other colours and materials for the lounge area, like the cognac leather Cosima couch with it's pine green woollen poufs by Danish Bolia.

Solidfloor™ is a brand of the Fetim group, which was founded in 1919 as the Haarlemse Fijnhouthandel. Since then the company designs and manufactures high-quality wooden floors that provide a warm, intimate atmosphere in all living spaces at home, but also in hotels, shops and offices. Well known interior designers like Ilse Crawford and leading architects like Piet Boon worked with Solidfloor™ and the wooden flooring has been used in a number of commercial venues from shops and stores to restaurants and galleries like The Conran Shop and Sotheby’s Sl2 Gallery to name a few.

I am really happy I was able to work with Solidfloor™ for the imm Bloggers Trend Show and many people came in to ask about the floor, we showed the sample pieces I brought with me and how to find the floor I choose plus the other options in the catalog.

I think showing a floor or any other piece of furniture in a stand like I made for imm is a great way for brands, retailers and buyers to show or see the floor in a 'home' setting. It was great to see people sit on the couch and touch and explore materials, a visitor told me that he never considered buying a wooden floor before but loved the atmosphere in the stand while someone else said she never really was into a brand before seeing it used the way I styled it in my stand.

I am so grateful for imm giving me the opportunity to share my ideas and inspire others. Please s
croll down for some more info on the different collections of Solidfloor™ and stay tuned for some beautiful homes I will show on the blog where Solidfloor™ was used in the near future!

Choosing a new floor for your home
If you consider a new floor I would love you to have a look at the website where you will have the possibility to go through a number of options to find the floor that would fit your personal taste and home best. In three easy steps you are guided though the different patterns, colours and finishes.

In the floor planner you can see how the floor would fit the colour of your walls and find installation and maintenance instructions of the floor you selected.

Piet Boon Design collection
Piet Boon teamed up with Solidfloor™ and put together a collection which consists of five different types of floor, available in seven exclusively selected Piet Boon colours giving you the possibility to bring the balanced Piet Boon style into your home: Piet Boon collection

Earth & Fire Collection
In the Earth & Fire collection you will find floors with names as St.Helens, Vesuvius, Moose and Yampa all referring and inspired by the silence of nature. Floors from this collection all have their own strong identity. Eart & Fire collection

Almost forty different finishes can be found in the Originals collection, covering the basic of the flooring range from Solidfloor with soft, earthy and natural woody tones in combination with a refined polish: Originals

If  you love light spaces with grey tints and chalky nuances combined with a smooth wooden finish the Lifestyle collection is the one you should have a look at first Lifestyle

Floors from this collection all have their very strong own character like the newly to the collection added 'Aubisque' in the picture above, which is coloured with a reactive stain (see detail information per floor)

The method of colouring creates a deep and warm character of these floors, caused by the natural reaction between the applied stain and tannin – a natural substance in oak.
The concentration of tannin differs from panel to panel, which makes every single plank unique. It may happen that a new floor has not yet reached it’s final colour during installation, as the reaction between the stain and tannin takes some time. This is normal and has nothing to do with the quality of the floor. The floor will reach it’s designated colour in the foreseeable future without any problems.

Floors from the vintage collection give you that nostalgic look, making you think they have been part of the house for ages: Vintage

New Classic
Do you ever dream of a beautiful Herringbone floor? Classic parquet floors are characterised by warm, deep colours that give the interior a chic and elegant look, while the stylish patterns have a grand impact. No wonder I have been showing some beautiful Parisian homes over the years with great floors giving the apartments that Parisian grandeur of the past. Have a look at the New classics collection to see some great examples that you could use for your own home.

Vosgesparis at IMM | IMMspired - a first look

Making beautiful mood boards was a great way to visualize my space at the Bloggers Trend show, and it was really fantastic to see it come alive this last weekend. Together with a friend and two great carpenters who helped moving heavy things around I styled the stand in a few hours into a warm and green space. In the picture you can see a part of it, I really love it and I am quite overwhelmed by the positive response I got, thank you so much for that!

I didn't managed to make that many pictures as I was busy all day talking with visitors and things to do, from interviews with the press to making pictures with visitors and explaining my idea behind the space to answering questions about everything from the amazing flooring by Solidfloor to the airplants in the atrium. I will be sure to make time in the next few days when I go back to make more detailed shots, as there is so much I want to show you.

This next Friday, Saturday and Sunday the fair is open to the public and you can still use the promocode in the sidebar for a special offer. I hope to see you then! Stay tuned for more updates soon, meanwhile have a look at this item at the IMM site to read more about the brands you see in the above picture

An 80s style industrial warehouse

What an amazing space I found through the blog of my friend Allan of Bungalow5 who is using this home as one of the main inspirations for the new home he is about to move in. The space and high ceiling also remind me a of the home of Paola Navone in Milan, which is an amazing industrial home. The existing 80s style warehouse furniture selection and joinery design was designed by Australian interior studio We are Huntly.

Styling van Joost | Bend the norm

Christmas holidays are definitely over, all work is done and I am ready to go to Cologne to style and present my booth next week. Being in January I can't help to also think about my next trip to Milan together with two friends. We are looking at apartments at the moment and can't wait to go back to Milan. I love travelling to Northern countries but Italy is part of my life and always feels like coming home.

This picture Wendy of BeeldSteil and I made some months ago for Dutch vtwonen Blogazine
inspired on our stay in Milan early 2016, I showed most pictures earlier in this post: A table setting and Milan favourites for vtwonen For the shoot we used the work of designers we met in Milan and on the picture above you see lamp 'Roest' by 'Van Joost' for Karven above my kitchen table. The black and white picture on the wall is from an old door photographed somewhere in Milan by Wendy.

During our stay in Milan we came across a number of Dutch designers including Joost van Veldhuizen. Next to his lights, including the one above, he exhibited a series of tables with names like 'Last supper' and 'Altar', an almost religious collection. Joost knows how to translate the strict Calvinist ideals and standards of his youth to designs that bend this standard. 'Bend the norm 'is his slogan.

This year he will also release a complete furniture collection for the Salvation Army called '50|50 Wood' find a sneak peek below, more of Joost's work can be found here

vtwonen paint for Graham and Brown | IMMspired Update

A new week and a new mood board to show you the colours by Graham & Brown I will use at my booth, it is such a fun way to show things don't you think. This whole project is so exciting and to be honest I have never done something this big! It is such an honour to have been asked by IMM, one of the most important European interior and design fairs, to show my very own style on 80 square meter. I hope to meet you and welcome you in my booth and show you around in my world. Find me at the Passage between hall 2-3 Stand P003

I love to build good relationships with brands and designers, and was really happy to find some I met during my travels exhibiting at IMM, and borrow furniture and accessories from them and other brands for the booth, I will also bring a huge suitcase filled with some personal things and the work of some designers I like.

At the start of the project I found an amazing concrete wallpaper with a cool graphic motive but as said before I wanted to go beyond the black, the white and the concrete walls. Maybe I even wanted to challenge myself to use some colour, and go for a stylish and darker atmosphere.

Choosing colours
Some time ago I received the hand painted samples from the vtwonen wall paint collection for Graham & Brown, I immediately loved the matte and powdery appearance and asked them to work with me on this project. Luckily they loved to sponsor me and with a sample of the dark floor I got sponsored by Solidfloor as a starting point I choose for the colours 'Pine' and 'Flax'.

When the layout of my booth changed during the process, I had to let go a few of my original ideas and therefore will use less green and added an additional light grey, all mixed with lots of cool furniture and
a few bold and stylish black and hand made pieces.

Graham & Brown
The innovative British wallpaper manufacturer Graham & Brown offers the latest wallpapers, wall decorations and paint for your house. Regularly they collaborate with well known designers in order to add new and creative work to the collection.

Together with Dutch interiors magazine vtwonen they developed a paint collection consisting of 40 colours from basic to contemporary. The wall paint, which I also used in my stand, consists of a matte paint with a chalk look. Colours can be combined with each other in order to perfectly fit every taste, and is next to wall paint available as a matte water based lacquer paint. The wall above was painted with paint from the collection.

Let's connect!
It is always fun to actually meet other bloggers and readers of Vosgesparis so I hope you will come and say hello and have a chat. We will have some cool prizes and exciting brands and designers to share on Instagram... let's connect!

Brands shown in the moodboard
In the moodboard you can see the Colours I will be working with: Flax, Pine and light grey all from the vt wonen wall paint by Graham & Brown

The Army green pouf is from the Cosima element sofa by Bolia which I will use in combination with some leather elements from the same collection, come and hang out on it!

Stool and side tables by Stefan Knopp for Janua I really love these and can't wait to see them at my booth as they represent that raw element I love to bring into a home. The
other pictures in the moodboard are found at Kinfolk and tumblr.

Rick Owens at MOCA Pacific Design Centre Los Angeles

Recently I showed the all new Rick Owens store in New York on the blog where like in all stores not only fashion but also furniture pieces are displayed, and as you might know whenever in Milan I always visit the store and furniture exhibition, here is a blog I wrote about my visit earlier this year: Rick Owens furniture line and store visit | Milan design week

I love this brutalist furniture style, the beautiful lines and the use of materials such as stone, concrete, marble and metal. For me it is like going to a museum and look at beautiful artwork.

For those of you in Los Angeles or visiting in the next few months there is a
Rick Owens exhibition at MOCA Pacific design centre in Los Angeles showing Owens' recent furniture, a new group of large-scale sculptures, and videos by Owens, alongside a selection of works by the late artist and musician Steven Parrino.
