Vitra campus visit
A few weeks ago Vitra invited me to join an international group to visit the Vitra campus, and early morning together with long time friend and blogger Patrick of Interiorator and the girls from Prchtg we flew to Basel. I had heard so much about the campus and I was really curious to finally see it with my own eyes. What followed were two intensive days and several guided tours along the amazing buildings by Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry en Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, Tadao Ando, that are spread over the immense campus.
Every building has it’s own function
, while Schaudepot gave us an inside look into the more then 400 pieces from the collection, The Vitra Museum showed every important detail of the live and work of Charles and Ray Eames in the exhibition ‘An Eames Celebration’. I had seen a movie about their work some years ago and everything came alive at the museum. Just everything was special, including the factories, and the huge slide. I really loved the vitra house, a beautiful building with a top floor showing an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ like setting with different Vitra furniture. Find more pictures of my trip, at Facebook
The history of Vitra
The Vitra story as we know it today started in 1953 when Willi Fehlbaum discovered a chair he really loved while visiting the United States. The chair was designed by Charles and Ray Eames and Willi was so fascinated by it he decided to become a furniture manufacturer. I was really impressed when visiting the campus and learning more about the history of Vitra, impossible to tell you all in a blogpost though, but by watching the video below you will get a good impression about the history of Vitra.
