Rick Owens and Scarlett Rouge | Staging by Michèle Lamy & Oliver Gustav

After missing out last year visiting Oliver Gustav, I was so pleased to be able to visit again when I was in Copenhagen last week. It turned out that a beautiful exhibition and collaboration between Oliver Gustav and Michèle Lamy with Rick Owens furniture among other had just being staged by Michèle and Oliver. If you read my blog for some time you will understand this was definitely the best of both worlds for me.

Seeing the many Rick Owens furniture pieces of which the larger ones I had only seen online in the beautiful space of Oliver Gustav was just amazing. The exhibition at Studio Oliver Gustav’s neoclassical museum building from 1920 offered a striking backdrop for the presentation bringing together the visionary artistry of Michèle Lamy and Oliver Gustav, framing the sculptural works of Rick Owens furniture and contributions from artistic voices by Scarlett Rouge, Giovanni Bassan, Kaare Golles, and Rasmus Rosengaard. More at Oliver Gustav, thank you for the warm welcome !

Maters Matter by Scarlett Rouge

Maters Matter by Scarlett Rouge represents the three stages of womanhood. It is a  triptych bas-relief, composed of carved plaster, pigment, and framed in wood. The title itself plays on the word Mater, which means mother – but it also resonates with matter, as in the material we are
made of, and we matter, as in our intrinsic value and importance.

In this piece Scarlet reflects the way our religious and political systems have historically oppressed the feminine. She draws a powerful connection between how we treat femininity and how we treat nature: both are subjected to control, limitation, and suppression. We try to put “nature” – our very own Mother Nature – into a box we think we can manage. But the irony is, we live inside that box. If we destroy it, we destroy ourselves.
