A few years ago I wrote an article about the Flexform mood store in Milan, which I visited during Milan design week. Have a look here in case you missed it. The brand has always been on my radar and is sold by some of the most prestigious interior design stores.
Flexform started as a family business in a workshop of the Galimberti brothers in 1959. After being taken over by their children, it became a leading Italian design brand. Known for their timeless design with sleek shapes and striking but soft materials, and eye for detail and comfort an extensive collection of furniture was created.
Flexform focuses mainly on sofas, each of which is characterized by a warm, atmospheric appearance, elegance, high-quality materials and a recognizable original signature.
The Flexform Groundpiece is one of the most popular sofas in the range. Groundpiece first launched in 2001 and designed by architect Antonio Citterio. It has changed our way of sitting on a sofa, making it less formal, lending itself to new functions. The design is based on an awareness that people behave in new ways. On a sofa you can read, reset, watch TV, but also work with a computer, or even eat dinner.
This also led to the brilliant idea of redesigning the armrest concept, which in Groundpiece can either be padded and upholstered or a cowhide-clad metal console, that can be used as a flat surface for accessories and provided with shelves to hold objects of all kinds.
Low storage elements can be inserted in the structure, replacing part of the back or the armrest, offering useful surfaces on which to place objects making the sofa even more inviting. The sofa is made of a metal frame with plastic foam filling. The base is covered with a protective fabric lining and the metal legs are treated with an epoxy lacquer.
By introducing and manufacturing various innovations, such as the incorporation of a storage unit in the armrests and the use of materials. The Groundpiece is a real design sofa that many embrace for its understated elegance, functionality and comfort. And with the many different configurations it will fit in any home.
